Pros and Cons of Getting a Water Softener for Your Home

The main purpose of a water softener is to reduce the high levels of minerals in water, also known as hardness in the water. An ideal water softener removes the minerals that you don’t need or are dangerous in high levels, leaving you with healthy, ‘soft’ water.

On the whole, hard water is water that contains unhealthy levels of dissolved minerals which are not ideal for domestic use. Many people wonder what causes hard water, but the main problem is the disadvantages that comes with hard water. From permanently stained laundry and dishes to damaged appliances and pipes; hard water is not meant for home use. This is why we have water softeners, to provide us with good, clean and healthy water.

Water softeners can be salt-based or salt-free, and it all depends on the one that is ideal for your home. This article compares salt-based systems to salt-free softeners but let’s focus on the benefits of using a water softener, and any disadvantages that you should look out for.

Pros :

  1. It Helps You Save Money :

Using a water softener would positively affect all your water appliances, such as washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers and others; which can get damaged by the lime scale that is deposited by hard water. It would also prevent rust and corrosion in your pipes and pumps. With a water softener, you save money on repairs. You would also reduce your electricity bills when it comes to your water heater and boiler.

  2. No More Stains :

Hard water causes your dishes, clothes, and any other thing you wash or clean at home to get reddish-brown stains. Soft water would prevent this and you get longer lasting dishes, cutlery and brighter, cleaner fabric.

  3. Reduced Use of Soap:

Hard water doesn’t work up a lather with soap, which is probably why you use a lot of soap. Soft water on the other hand does not contain the minerals that prevent soap lather and so it works up a lather quickly; causing you to save soap.

  4. Healthy Skin and Hair :

Unlike hard water that causes dry hair and irritated skin, soft water makes your skin and hair look healthy and soft.

  5. Low Water Usage :

Because soft water is effective and easy to use around the house, you would reduce your water usage.

Cons :

  1. Maintenance :

Water softeners usually require a lot of maintenance, especially when using salt-based systems because they require salt replacements, cleaning of the resin bed and also proper maintenance. Water softeners can also cause your sewer bill to increase because some water softeners waste water, depending on how hard your water is, and send it down the sewer.

  2. Installation :

Water softening systems usually require costly installation by a professional plumber. It can also affect your water pressure if it is not properly installed.

  3. Environmental Effects :

Soft water is not easy to recycle, and needs more resources to do so by the treatment plants. Also, the waste water from the water softener, especially salt-based softeners, can affect freshwater areas and aquatic life.
